I am of no relation to the Nesbit's at all but my Aunt gave me several items before she passed away recently. Among them was a Book of Scottish songs given to my Uncle while he was stationed in Scotland. I don't know for sure when he was stationed there (possibly between 1940 to 1945) but the book was signed, twice by a Robert Nisbet in January of 1873 and then again in 1875. I am really intrigued by who Robert might have been. This is all the information I have. If anyone feels like this could possibly be their ancestor I can dig through my Uncles possessions that were left to me and possibly find out exactly where in Scotland he was stationed. Hope to here from some of the Nisbet Clan Teresa

Hello everyone! My family lives in central Texas, near Austin. I've always been curious about my heritage, but no one seemed to know much about the Nesbitt name. In fact, no one in my family is sure if it is English, Irish, or Scottish. Can all Nesbitts be traced back to one country, or do they come from several different ones? Just curious.P.S. Cool website

Hi from Aylmer Ontario Just a note from a large family of Nesbitt's. Our Nesbitt relatives came to Ottawa in the 1840's from Ireland. Several brothers left and moved on to Toronto and some further to the London and Aylmer area. I have 4 brothers: Ken, Dan, Tim and Ron. My father is Jack and my grandfather was Harvey. My great grandfather was Samuel. My great great grandfather was William. We believe some of our first relatives from Ottawa were John and William and Robert Nesbitt. This is a great site, keep up the good work. Tom

Thank you so much for your wondeful pages and information. Boy was I surprised when a goggle search dropped me into your site. And then to find that one of your ancestors has done such careful research on the Cosby branch of your family was wonderful. The female Cosby family memebers have been quite hard for us to pinpoint from here in the states, and there are many branches missing on their lines so this was a gold mine for me. I am sending on your url to all of the Cosby researchers I know, so they can read the wonderful article's also. I have only one thing I am currious about, and that is that other reseachers lay claim to being able to document the Cosby/Cossibie/Cosbie line back to Charlamane(SP?) and yet a decendant of much closer lineage doesn't seem to feel that is the case. Would you by chance know of any one else in the Nesbit family who has dug into this branch and might have further research?? The Cosby line from Robert on down is pretty well

I recently acquired a watercolor painting/cartoon signed by P. Nesbitt that is wonderfully done. I am seeking information about the artist. I bought the painting in Los Angeles Ca. and judging by the style of frame and mat I would guess that it was composed circa 1950 or before. The painting is a cartoon of a couple of elephants being frieghtened by a mouse on a half sheet of watercolor paper. The work is excellent and looks almost Disney-like. If any one can tell me something about the artist I would appreciate it. Thanks.

My family & I will visit Scotland in June 1999 and we are most anxious to connect with our last-surviving Scottish cousin, Helen NISBET, formerly of 20 Sunnyside Terrace, Holytown, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She is the daughter of Andrew & Bessie NISBET (both believed now to be deceased), who resided at the above address until at least the mid-1980s or later. Helen was married in 1979 to a William "Will" (surname unknown) at the Presbyterian Church in Holytown, Motherwell. From their wedding photograph, I would "guesstimate" that Helen was born in the late 50s and would now be around 40 years of age. I am told that her husband, Will, may have been employed in the North Sea oil business. Can anyone help me to locate her? Just knowing her married name would be most helpful. Grateful thanks to anyone who can help, Diana Hawkins.

My gr gr grandfather Nimrod Nesbit (mulatto) was the son of either James Madison Nesbitt of Spartanburg, SC or Andrew Jackson Nesbitt. It is more plausible that Nimrod was fathered by James though oral history says Andrew. Judging by the age of Andrew Jackson at the time of Nimrod's birth (1832), it is highly improbable that he was the father. Each of the first of Nimrod's boys were named (still in slavery) Andrew, and Jacson; the daughters were named Patsey, Ida, and Deview. Later sons were named Samuel, Joseph, and James (known as Fess, short for Professor), William, and Aron Nesbitt. Anyone with any addtional information can email me anytime. In later years, Aron named his daughter what I believe was the name Emma (like the wife of Andrew Jackson - son of Joseph Nesbitt and Elizabeth Snoddy Nesbitt) However, because many blacks could not read or write this girl's name was shortened to Ina (probably pronounced Emma)

DEAR FRIENDS AND NESBITS EVERYWHERE (I AM AMAZED AT THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION)OF THE CLAN. i WOULD DEARLY LOVE TO KNOW WHAT BROUGHT THE NESBIT FAMILY TO IRELAND(COUNTY KILKENNY).MY ANCESTORS ARRIVED IN UPPER CANADA IN 1832 AND SETTLED IN NORTH GWILLIAMBURY TOWNSHIP (NORTH OF BRADFORD,ONT.)THEY WERE A FARMING FAMILY AND THERE ARE STILL NESBITS AT GILFORD. MY GRANDFATHER J.E. NESBIT MOVED TO NEWMARKET, WHERE MY MOTHER MAE NESBIT WAS BORN IN 1912. I WAS ALWAYS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE NESBITS WERE IRISH, NOW I REALIZE THAT THE CLAN GOES WAY BACK TO SCOTLAND. I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND OUT THE REASON THEY MOVED TO IRELAND , WHEN ,WHY ,WHO,WHAT,AND ALSO I AM WONDERING IF THERE ARE STILL NESBITS IN KILKENNY? I KNOW THIS IS A TALL ORDER BUT I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW, SOON I PLAN AJOURNEY TO IRELAND AND SCOTLAND AND IT WOULD HELP ME TO HAVE THIS BACKGROUND INFORMATION. I THANK YOU . I guess I wrote too much, and the last paragraph seems to have not been sent. Sarah Nisbet, b. May, 1784, Lancaster Dist. S.C., M. Dec. 1803 Israel Pickens Davis, b. B. Apr. 1782, Mecklenburg Co., N.C. She died June 24, 1861 in Monticello, Ark. Thus ends the name Nisbet in my line. I believe there is at least 1 (maybe 2) generations missing between Murdoch and the first James. 85 years is a long time for 1 generation, even for the Nisbets! I hope some of you can solve this for me. Murdoch translated the New Testament into Scots so the people could read it for themself. (Had to stay in hiding to do it). The original is in the British Museum in London.

What a pleasant surprise to find this site. I am a first generation Nesbitt in South Africa, living in Somerset West just outside Cape Town. My father was from Warren Point, N. Ireland and emigrated to South Africa in 1947.

I know very little of when Nesbitts first came to Nova Scotia or where they came from except that we were originally from Scotland. If you have any information on the history of Nesbitts in Nova Scotia, specificly Weymouth, please e-mail me.
