Interesting Site! I am the grand daughter of Thomas Livingston Nisbet of Dunfirmlin Scotland. He emigrated to Bermuda where my father Thomas William was born. He then moved to Nassau Bahamas where we were all raised. My older brother Thomas Stewart, Sisters Betsy, Gretchen and Katherine. Our father has passed away, but he was deeply interested in his Nisbet heritage, and he had traced our roots to the early 1100's.

William and his family paid taxes in 1810 in Delaware Co. New York. I have been at this GREAT SITE before and have others looking for the same people. I have a photo of two people and written on the back is "George and Annebella Nesbitt who went west in a covered wagon and settled in Cambridge, Minn. Also is the name John Miller. The Nesbitts that settled in Roses brook in Delaware Co. lived next to a Miller family. The photo was taken by S.A. Johnson and he was in the Minn. area from 1856 to 1900. So this gives a time of when this photo was taken. My grandmother always said that the Nesbitts came from England with other family members and that the other members of the family went on west. Is anyone interested in a copy of this photo, or anyone heard of Nesbitts coming from England into New York State and moving on west? Again, this is a great site for finding your roots. Dick Nesbitt

Let me start by saying this is my first time seeing this website and I am thrilled to find a source to my background, and a chance to meet other Nesbitt's. I had heard of this from my brother which I thought to be a rumor, but this is great. I have a tattoo of a Nesbitt crest with the three boars heads on a shield - it is really cool and I wear it with pride but I reguire some Nesbitt/Nisbet crest designs, if anyone in this website may have some of these, for I would like to have some patches and maybe some embroidery for my father for x-mas - it would be muchly appreciated. Any other Nesbitt/Nisbets wishing to chat - my email: ybblood@yahoo.com, Nesbitt/Nisbet's rule.

My great grandfather, James Nesbitt is originally from Scotland (place not known) and then moved on to Newcastle. He married a lady named Sarah and then they had moved on to Canada on a small homestead in Northern Saskatchewan in a town called Spiritwood. My grandfather's name is David and he was the first child born in Canada out of his siblings. I believe that one of my great grandfather's brothers also moved to Canada long after he did, they resided in a town called Radisson in Saskatchewan, Canada (possibly Edward Nesbitt). My grandfather David passed away about 15 years ago, and my family and I still reside in Saskatchewan. If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know, I would love to hear from distant relatives!!

My father and I were discussing family lineage, and he was trying to remember the name of his Great Grandfather (back then they only called grandparents by their last name). If we could find his name it would be soo much easier to trace our family history. We know this much: Clark Edwin Nisbet Sr. (has eight children) is the only Son of Marvin Edwin Nisbet (and Neva Louise Norris) who is the son of Edwin Albert Nisbet, Edwin Albert was married to Berth Rahn and was one of five children, I believe, and I have always been told I am fifth generation Arizonan, but who are the other generations, who are my ancestors....no one seems to know. What is known is that we came from New york down through Georgia and then headed west and that we were NOT the Nisbet's who went to Illinois. I was hoping you could provide some answers for future generations here out west. Please E-mail me and let us know what you have. Thank-you. Sincerely, Emily R Nisbet

I think this site should keep guest book entries around for longer, or should archive them off, but they should still be available. I had some good feedback in the guest book about Robert Hogg Nisbet, the Connecticut painter, last year, but they are all gone now. And is this site as slow for everyone else as it is for me? Thanks, BobThe Webmaster responds:All entries made in the Guest Book since its inception are available for viewing. The default action for the Guest Book page is to display entries for the current and preceding month only. There are, however, 3 ways to view the entries for a different period:Select a custom date range by modifying the from and to dates and clicking the Show button, Select all entries for a specific year by clicking on the appropriate year link (e.g. 1999), Select all entries in the guest book by clicking on the All Years link - this option may take a minute or so to complete. All 3 options are located at the top of the Guest Book page.As far as the speed of the site goes, this usually depends on your internet connection/ISP. At times bottlenecks do occur at the hosting site, but this is typically not the case.Hope that this helps!

I am searching for information about my grandfather between the years 1873 and 1882. Here are key facts about his life before and after that period: He was born on April 27, 1856 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, the son of John Wood Nisbet and his wife, Elizabeth. They named him George Wood Nisbet. After his father's death in 1868, he was living with his mother, a sister Elizabeth, and a half-sister in St. Catharines, Ontario. They were all living there when the Census of 1871 was taken. In 1872, his sister married a wealthy businessman named Elijah Peckham. She moved to her husband's home in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1873, my grandfather came to the United States, according to the 1900 Census for Accomack County, Virginia. He did not arrive in that county until 1882. He took up residence in the village of Hoffmans Wharf - present day Harborton. He arrived by steamboat from Baltimore, Maryland, and began employment in the newly erected menhaden factory as a plant engineer. According to the marriage license when he married my grandmother in 1892, he was a widower. No information was forthcoming from my grandmother or her children during their lifetimes concerning grnadfather's first marriage or the reasons for his name change. After searching for decades for answers about his whereabouts between 1873 and 1882, his first marriage and possible descendants from that marriage, and most of all, what prompted him to change his name, I am in need of help! Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! My family did ask about the purchase of Nisbet House and we were saddened that we could not afford to purchase it. We too believe it should say in the family. We would love to have our family crest placed or remain above the front door. We have 2 small children. We would also have to move from America to Scotland and don't know how to go about doing that. We also don't currently own a home. We don't know how to go about purchasing a castle/manor in Scotland :(( But we did dream for a little bit. That place is very beautiful!!!

Looking to trace my mother's ancestors back to Scotland. I believe my mother (Jeanette Nisbet) and her 3 brothers -- John Nisbet (also known as Jack), William Nisbet (also known as Billy) and Thomas Nisbet (also known as Tommy) were all born in Scotland but immigrated to Massachusets -- the North Weymouth area south of Boston -- in the early 1920's. All four siblings are now deceased. John (wife - Dorothy) and Thomas (wife - Claudia) stayed in the Weymouth area; Bill (wife - Florence) moved to Connecticut. Jeanette moved to California in the early 1940s and married Harold E. Peterson (my father) in 1948. My mom started to trace her lineage but died before telling me where her notes were kept. I know I have first cousins scattered all about, so if you're one of them, please let me know!

My Nesbitts seem to begin with William Nesbit and Mary Middleton, m. 1789/90 in Earsdon by North Shields, Northumberland, England. Their son, William, married Margaret/Marjorie Bambrough in Gosforth in 1820 and had five of his own in Gosforth; of those five, the eldest, James (b. 1822), married Ann (someone) of North Shields (b. 1824), and they produced kids in Burradon/Longbenton, then Haswell, and then Usworth and Washington. Nesbitts with Northumberland and Durham connections: I'd love to hear from you. :)

Hello! I am 19 years old and am the baby out of my line in the family. My dad only had 2 daughters and has no son to carry on his name, he had a brother who has a daughter, but he died when I was a baby. As long as I am unmarried, I am the last. I would really like to know if anyone knows about ANY NESBITT family history from the area of Berwick-upon-Tweed as this is where my Grandfather, Walter Nesbitt (born 1914) was from (we believe that the name originates from there as near Berwick is a place called Nesbit, although it is marked on the map we can never find it to visit.) Would be grateful for any information as I am the only person in my family curious enough to ask (my dad never thought to ask his family about the family history and now he is the only one left.) Thank you very much - Catherine Nesbitt

I'm looking for the parents of Eleanor Nesbitt (Elinor Nisbit in the West Nottingham Presbyterian marriage register). She married William Tosh at West Nottingham Pres. Cecil Co. MD in 1808. They reared a large family near Colora, Cecil Co. MD. Eleanor died in 1862. There is a mention of a Samuel Nesbitt, Robert Nesbitt, and a Moses Nesbitt in a will of Eleanor's brother-in-law. I suspect these are her brothers.

Nesbit and I am helping my great-aunt, his aunt, put together a family tree. I do know that my great-great grandfather married a woman with the last name Denniston. Her family sold Glasgow some land and eventually that land was named Dennistown?. If you have any information on this please let me know. Thank you, Tate

I would be very happy to hear from any Nisbets (or Nesbitts) interested in the Pipe Organ, or the painter Robert H. Nisbet, N.A.(1879-1961), my great uncle. I am an organist, pianist, and representative of Gebr. Oberlinger Orgelbau in America. Gebr. Oberlinger is one of the largest and oldest mechanical-action pipe organ builders in Germany, handcrafting instruments in the Middle-Rhine tradition, traditionally blending the best of the German and French organbuilding traditions. My father William Charles Hood Nisbet born on 18 Mar 1930 sadly is no longer with me due to a heart attack in 1993. He would have been very touched by this web site as we lost touch with his brother and sisters around 35 years ago, possibly early 1960's. I felt isolated with thoughts that we were the only Nisbets in the whole world. Throughout my childhood I asked him about my aunts and uncle and heard nothing but sorrow in his eyes. Could there have been some painful memories? However, I do know that I have early memories of two well-looked after girls a couple years older than myself whom I had been led to believe were my cousins but later was led to believe that I had never met any of my dad's family. There is a lot of mystery there that I would like to clear up. William was brought up in the West End of Glasgow, he had 1 older brother named George and I think he had 3 sisters with red hair one named Elizabeth. I am not sure of his dad's name but he may have helped with shelter duties during the second world war. As far as I know William's mother died in child birth, I think her name was Margaret. His father remarried at a later date when William was just a small lad, I think her name was Mary. For whatever reason contact discontinued, I look forward to reconcilate with my family and to hear of all those early memories, photographs if any, and most of all to have a loving family network for myself and my children. I am proud to be a NISBET.

Hello My great-grandmother was a Nesbitt, from Ireland, I am told. She married an Englishman by the name of Proctor. Birmingham has been mentioned as a place of residence. They came to Canada in the late 19th century or early 20th, and settled in Montreal. My grandmother's name was Stella Proctor. She died quite young of goiter. I am looking for documentation to prove (or disprove I guess!) the above. I am quite familiar with my French ancestry (Rivard) but have yet to delve into my German side (Rothweiler). But right now, I am more interested in finding out about my UK roots. If anyone can help me, I would be very grateful.
